Our Testing Methodology

Full transparency on how we test VPNs. Every number on this site comes from real tests — here's exactly how we run them.

Testing environment

All tests are run on a dedicated 1 Gbps symmetric fibre connection to eliminate ISP variability. We test from locations in the US (East Coast), US (West Coast), UK (London), and EU (Germany). Each VPN is tested for a minimum of 30 days before publishing a review.

Speed testing

⚡ How we measure speed

Automated speed tests run 3× daily (morning, afternoon, evening) using a custom test suite. We measure download speed, upload speed, and latency (ping) on each VPN server. Results are averaged across the full 30-day period. Speed loss % is calculated against our baseline (no VPN) connection measured under identical conditions.

Leak testing

🔒 What we check for

We run 200+ leak tests per VPN using ipleak.net, dnsleaktest.com, and our own custom test scripts. We check for: DNS leaks, IPv4 leaks, IPv6 leaks, and WebRTC leaks. Tests are run on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Any confirmed leak results in an immediate score penalty.

Streaming tests

📺 Weekly streaming checks

Every Monday we test each VPN against: Netflix US, Netflix UK, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, HBO Max, and Hulu. A platform "passes" only if content fully loads and streams for at least 10 minutes without interruption. Bypassing the error page alone does not count as a pass.

Privacy analysis

📜 What we review

We read every privacy policy in full, review all published audit reports, and research the VPN's corporate structure and jurisdiction. We check for: no-logs claims and whether they've been independently verified, jurisdiction and data retention laws, ownership structure and any corporate affiliations, court cases or data disclosure history.
